Ant International has made a move that deserves attention. The company has open-sourced its Agentic Mobile Protocol, or AMP, and that shifts AI agents from novelty into commerce. Not chatbot commerce. Actual payments for goods through existing wallets. That is the hinge. For years, the industry talked about AI assistants that could suggest products or compare prices, yet the final purchase still depended on a human. Ant wants software agents to act inside payment systems as trusted participants. Ten major Asian wallets sit in the first wave through Alipay+, reaching about 1.5 billion consumer accounts. Numbers like that announce a serious attempt to make machine-driven shopping part of normal retail infrastructure.

A new actor pays

What AMP signals is simple. Payments no longer revolve around only buyers and sellers. A third actor has arrived, the machine agent, and Ant wants that actor recognized inside the rules. That matters. A recommendation engine can stay in the background. A shopping agent that actually pays must show identity, intent, and limits. Ant’s idea is to let these agents operate securely through mobile wallets people already trust. That is smarter than building a separate payment universe from scratch. Payment history punishes systems that ignore habits. Agent payments will spread only if they fit current trust structures.

Asia tests the idea

The regional focus is no accident. Asia has the wallet adoption, merchant density, and consumer behavior needed to test this at scale. Alipay in mainland China, AlipayHK in Hong Kong, Starryblu in Singapore, KakaoPay and Toss in South Korea are woven into daily spending. Transport, meals, shopping, bills. The phone already acts as the wallet. That makes the region a natural proving ground for agentic commerce. In a weaker market, the protocol would have to solve too many basic adoption problems first. Here, the hard question stands clearly. Can an AI agent buy safely on a user’s behalf without opening the door to fraud, confusion, or loss of control?

Open source means pressure

Putting the protocol on GitHub is not just a public relations flourish. Standards gain force when others can inspect them, test them, and build around them. Closed systems can dominate for a time. Open systems often shape wider markets because they attract developers and partners who do not want permanent dependence on one company. Still, payments are brutal. Nice code means little if security fails, disputes pile up, or consent becomes murky. A payment protocol must survive hostile testing and legal scrutiny, not just engineering applause. AMP matters more as infrastructure than as a headline. It tries to turn AI shopping from a flashy demo into something networks and merchants can trust.

The separate push with Visa and Mastercard on a know-your-agent framework may prove even more important. KYA sounds dry. Dry things run finance. If an AI agent books travel, buys electronics, or handles recurring purchases, the network must know what that agent is, who authorized it, and what limits bind it. Without that, the entire model collapses into fraud and disputes. Card networks understand that pain better than most technology companies. Their involvement suggests this is not a side experiment. It is an effort to write rules before bad behavior writes them first. That battle will decide whether agentic commerce becomes trusted infrastructure or just another overhyped feature.

A clear pattern emerges. Tech firms have spent years teaching machines to talk. Commerce asks whether those machines can act inside systems where mistakes cost money. Ant International has answered with a concrete plan rather than a vague promise. Build a protocol. Connect it to wallet infrastructure that already reaches huge populations. Pair it with identity rules that financial networks can respect. Then test whether agents deserve operational trust. That approach has weight. It also has stakes. If agent shopping becomes normal, power will sit with firms controlling verification, permissions, and payment access. Ant has placed itself near the center of that fight, and the rest of the industry now has to respond.
