The Forgotten iPhone: The New iPhone 8
During the iPhone X’s release at the brand new Steve Jobs Theater, it blew everyone’s mind – artificial capabilities, augmented reality capabilities, facial recognition function, and the most powerful specs on any phone ever created! Needless to say, this is the highlight of the show.
But actually no, it isn’t the iPhone X that should have been the star of the show. While everyone was just wowing at the X’s specs, getting worried about the facial recognition function’s security measures, and despairing about the $1,000 price tag, there is one other iPhone that was launched that night. It is, of course, the iPhone 8, and although it’s not as brilliant as its fraternal twin sister, it is, of course, a good phone.
The Lesser iPhone
The iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus, have almost similar specs; the only difference is that the Plus is wider than the ordinary variant:
- The iPhone 8 is covered with durable glass, both on the front and back of the device, reinforced by laser-welded steel and copper structure. The phone is microscopically sealed with an Aerospace-grade, custom aluminum alloy band for water and dust resistance, and comes in 3 colors: silver, space gray, and gold.
- It has a new 4.7-inch Retina HD display (compared to the Super Retina that the iPhone X has) for the iPhone 8 and a 5.5-inch Retina HD display for the iPhone 8 Plus. It has great color accuracy, cinema-wide color gamut, the 3D touch technology and True Tone technology.
- The new iPhone has two stereo speakers that are 25% louder than the iPhone 7’s and a deeper base.
- The iPhone 8 is powered by the same A11 Bionic neural engine as the iPhone X. It is a six-core CPU with a 64-bit design and 4.3 billion transistors. The six cores are composed of two performance cores and 4 high-efficiency cores. It is 70% better than the former A10 chip. It is managed by a 2nd-generation, Apple-designed, performance controller. It also has the Apple-designed GPU, same as the iPhone X. This means a lot because the iPhone 8 doesn’t have the face recognition capabilities of the iPhone X, meaning that all that processing power is concentrated to your apps. It also means that it has AI capabilities, same with the iPhone X. It also comes equipped with an Apple-designed ISP that ensures faster low-light autofocus, an improved pixel processor, and has hardware multiband noise reduction.
- The iPhone 8’s cameras are brand new twelve-megapixel sensors, that have deeper pixels and a new color filter. One of the two has f/1.8 apertures and the other has f/2.8 apertures. It also has the same state-of-the-art lighting function that iPhone X has. The A11 Bionic chip has an Apple-designed video encoder that gives the iPhone 8 faster video frame rates and real-time image and motion analysis. The cameras are also tuned for augmented reality purposes, has low light, 60fps, a new gyro, accelerometer, and accurate motion tracking. The A11 Bionic chip greatly improves the AR capabilities of the iPhone 8: the CPU handles world tracking and scenes, the GPU is used to render realistic graphics, and the ISP provides real-time lighting.
- Wireless capabilities include Bluetooth 5.0, LTE advanced, and has Qi wireless charging.
- The iPhone 8 comes with 64 GB capacity or 256 GB capacity.
- As of September 19, the new iPhone 8 runs on iOS 11.
The Price
But what about the price? Well, for those who really care, you’ll be glad to know that the iPhone 8 is priced at $700. The iPhone 8 Plus starts at $800. That’s $200 to $300 less than the iPhone X. All of these are available for order now.
Conclusion
If you’re really worried about the Face ID’s security you’d best be off without it. The new iPhone 8 is just as powerful as the iPhone X. It has the same A11 Bionic chip, the same AR capabilities, the same wireless technology. And most importantly, it costs less than its sister. It’s beautiful, powerful and cheaper.
